Why Introverts Love Their Engagement Sessions

When couples reach out about an engagement session, one of the first things I often hear is:

"We're really awkward in front of the camera."

Or...

"We're pretty introverted."

Or my personal favorite...

"We have absolutely no idea what we're doing."

Honestly?

Those are some of my favorite couples to photograph.

Not because I expect them to magically become comfortable—but because I know they don't have to.

As an Introvert Myself, I Get It

Here's the truth:

I'm an introvert too.

I know what it feels like to be the center of attention when you'd rather blend into the background.

I know how exhausting it can feel to have people watching you.

And I definitely understand that the idea of spending an hour posing in front of strangers doesn't exactly sound relaxing.

That's probably why my sessions look a little different.

I don't expect you to become someone you're not.

Instead, I build the session around who you already are.

Your Session Doesn't Have to Look Like Everyone Else's

One of my favorite engagement sessions perfectly captured this idea.

We met on a weekday in NoDa—not by accident, but because weekdays are usually much quieter. That meant fewer crowds, fewer distractions, and more opportunities for my couple to simply enjoy being together.

Instead of heading straight to the busiest streets, we wandered.

We found tucked-away corners, quiet sidewalks, colorful walls, and little hidden spots where they could laugh, talk, and just be themselves without feeling like dozens of people were watching.

There wasn't any pressure to perform.

Just two people enjoying an afternoon together.

Later, we stopped by The NoDa Company Store, grabbed a couple of beers, and spent some time simply hanging out.

Some of my favorite photographs from the entire session came from those quiet moments.

Nothing felt forced because nothing needed to be.

I Don't Need You to Know What You're Doing

One thing I tell nearly every couple is this:

You don't need to know what to do.

That's my job.

I'll guide you when you need it.

I'll offer direction when it helps.

But I'm never looking for perfectly posed, magazine-worthy moments.

I'm looking for the way you naturally smile at each other.

The way you reach for each other's hand without thinking.

The conversations that make you both laugh.

Those moments can't be forced—and they certainly don't require you to be outgoing.

Quiet Is Perfectly Okay

Not every couple spends their entire session talking.

Some walk hand in hand.

Some pause to take in the scenery.

Some simply enjoy being together.

And honestly?

I love that.

Silence isn't awkward.

It's often where the most genuine moments happen.

There isn't any pressure to constantly smile, laugh, or entertain the camera.

Your session should feel like spending time together—not performing for an audience.

The Best Photos Come From Feeling Comfortable

Beautiful photographs don't happen because someone knows how to pose.

They happen because people feel safe enough to be themselves.

That's always my goal.

Whether that means choosing a quiet weekday, finding hidden corners away from the crowds, grabbing a drink at your favorite brewery, or simply slowing down and letting the session unfold naturally, I'm happy to create an experience that feels authentic to you.

Because the best engagement session isn't the one that looks like everyone else's.

It's the one that feels like yours.
