One Outfit or Two? Planning Your Engagement Session
/One of the questions I get asked most often before an engagement session is, "Should we bring a second outfit?"
The short answer? If you want to!
There really isn't a right or wrong answer. I've photographed beautiful sessions with one outfit and others with two (or even three!). It all comes down to what feels right for you and the type of experience you're hoping to have.
Why I Love a Second Outfit
If you're torn, there are definitely some benefits to bringing a second look.
Many couples choose one dressier outfit and one that's a little more relaxed. It gives your gallery some variety and can make your photos feel like they were taken on two completely different days.
If we're visiting multiple locations, changing outfits can also help each setting feel unique. A downtown cityscape might pair perfectly with a dressier look, while a nearby park or mountain overlook feels more natural with something casual.
It's a simple way to add variety without changing anything about your connection with each other.
When I Usually Recommend It
I tend to recommend bringing a second outfit if:
We're planning a longer session.
We're visiting more than one location.
You'd love a mix of formal and casual images.
You're excited about changing your look.
If it fits naturally into the session, I'm always happy to make it happen.
When One Outfit Is More Than Enough
On the other hand, one outfit is often the perfect choice.
If we're hiking to a location, chasing sunset light, or working within a shorter session, stopping to change clothes can sometimes interrupt the flow.
And honestly? That's usually my biggest consideration.
Once you settle in, relax, and forget there's a camera in front of you, that's when the magic happens. You're laughing, talking, and simply enjoying each other. Sometimes stopping everything for a wardrobe change can break that momentum.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't do it—it just means I like to be intentional about when it makes sense.
A Few Outfit Tips
No matter how many outfits you decide to bring, here are a few things that always photograph beautifully:
Coordinate your outfits instead of matching exactly.
Choose clothing you feel comfortable and confident wearing.
Stick to timeless pieces rather than large logos or busy patterns.
Bring shoes you can comfortably walk in if we'll be exploring.
Don't forget a lint roller if you're wearing darker colors (especially if you have pets!).
Most importantly, wear something that feels like you. The best photos happen when you're comfortable enough to forget you're being photographed.
My Advice
If you're still on the fence, here's what I'd tell you:
Bring a second outfit if it sounds fun, fits naturally into the session, and gives you the variety you're looking for.
If it feels stressful or rushed, don't worry about it.
I'd much rather spend our time laughing, exploring, and creating genuine moments than watching the clock while you change clothes.
At the end of the day, your connection with each other will always matter more than what you're wearing.
