Why Family Photos Matter Even After Your Kids Grow Up

An In-Home Extended Family Photography Session in Charlotte, NC

When most people think about family photography, they picture toddlers chasing bubbles through a park, coordinated outfits, or annual Christmas cards.

But here's something I wish more families realized:

Family photos don't stop being important just because your children grow up.

In many ways, they become even more meaningful.

This beautiful family reached out while everyone was planning to be together for Thanksgiving. Some family members—and Grandma—were traveling into Charlotte, and they wanted to capture this season while everyone was finally in the same place.

There wasn't a birthday to celebrate. There wasn't an anniversary or a new baby.

There was simply the understanding that getting everyone together doesn't happen nearly as often anymore, and those moments deserve to be remembered.

Home Was the Perfect Location

One of my favorite things about this session is that it didn't happen at a park or a popular Charlotte photo location.

It happened at home.

With family members traveling into town for Thanksgiving, everyone wanted the day to feel as relaxed as possible—and that included the pets. Instead of loading dogs into the car or hoping the cats would cooperate somewhere unfamiliar, we decided the family's own backyard would be the perfect setting.

Before the session, they even sent me photos of their backyard during different times of the day so we could choose the best light. Together, we settled on the evening, swept the patio, tucked away a few distractions, lit the outdoor fireplace, and transformed a space they already loved into the backdrop for their family portraits.

Sometimes the best location isn't somewhere new.

It's the place where your memories are already being made.

Family Photos Are About Relationships, Not Just One Big Group Picture

When people think about an extended family session, they often imagine one large group photo.

While those are certainly important, they're only one small part of the story.

My goal is always to document the relationships that make your family unique.

For this session, that meant photographing Grandma with her daughter and four granddaughters, each couple individually, the sisters together, individual portraits, and, of course, the beloved pets who are just as much a part of the family as anyone else.

Every family looks different.

Some have young children running around.

Others are celebrating adult children, welcoming partners into the family, or simply enjoying the rare opportunity to have everyone together in one place.

Those relationships deserve to be documented just as much as any milestone.

My Approach to Large Family Sessions

One of the questions I hear most often is, "How do you photograph so many people without it feeling chaotic?"

The answer is simple: we start with a plan.

I always begin with the largest groupings while everyone's fresh and together. From there, I photograph the oldest family members early so they aren't standing around for the entire session. If young children are part of the group, I'll work them in around that time as well, depending on how they're feeling.

Once those important portraits are complete, we can slow down and enjoy creating all the smaller combinations that often become family favorites.

Parents and children.

Grandparents with grandchildren.

Adult siblings.

Couples.

Individual portraits.

By the end of the session, you don't just have one family portrait—you have a gallery that tells the story of every important relationship.

Yes, Bring the Pets

If you've spent any time on my website, you already know I'm a huge believer that pets belong in family photos.

This session included both dogs and cats, and while the cats needed a little more convincing than everyone else (they definitely had their own opinions), I'm so glad they were included.

Our pets are part of our daily lives.

They're there for holiday mornings, lazy afternoons on the porch, and quiet evenings at home. It only makes sense that they should be part of the photographs that tell your family's story.

One of the biggest advantages of photographing this session at home was that everyone—especially the animals—could stay somewhere they felt comfortable.

The Best Family Photos Happen When Everyone Can Be Themselves

Like so many sessions, a few people admitted they were a little nervous before we started.

That's completely normal.

The funny thing is, those nerves almost always disappear once everyone stops worrying about the camera and starts interacting with each other.

That's exactly what happened here.

The laughter became genuine.

The teasing started.

The couples relaxed.

Grandma couldn't stop smiling as she watched her daughter and granddaughters together.

One of the things I loved most about this family was how comfortable everyone was simply being themselves. You could see the independence, humor, and personality of each granddaughter, and it was just as clear that the partners who had become part of the family felt welcomed right alongside them.

Those aren't things you can pose.

They're simply the result of creating a space where people feel comfortable enough to let their personalities shine.

Family Keeps Changing—And That's Worth Remembering

Families don't stop growing once the children become adults.

The milestones simply change.

Partners become part of the story.

Pets become family.

Holiday gatherings become a little more meaningful because they're harder to coordinate.

Parents become grandparents.

And before you know it, you're looking back wondering when everyone grew up.

That's exactly why sessions like this matter.

They're not about perfection.

They're about preserving the people, relationships, and personalities that make your family uniquely yours.

Ready to Tell Your Family's Story?

Whether your family gathers every weekend or only manages to get everyone together once a year, there has never been a better time to document this season of life.

From helping choose the perfect location to organizing large groups efficiently and making everyone—from grandparents to reluctant partners to curious cats—feel comfortable, my goal is to create an experience that's relaxed, enjoyable, and completely centered around your family.

Because one day, these photographs won't just remind you what everyone looked like.

They'll remind you what it felt like to be together.

If you're ready to plan an extended family session, I'd love to help you preserve this chapter of your family's story.
