What to Wear for Christmas Family Photos | Charlotte Family Photographer
/Christmas family photos don't have to mean matching pajamas, Christmas trees, or elaborate holiday backdrops. Sometimes, all you need is a beautiful location, a little golden-hour sunshine, and the perfect combination of festive colors.
This Christmas-inspired family session with the Peterson family is one of my favorite examples of how to incorporate traditional holiday colors into family portraits while keeping everything natural, timeless, and full of personality.
Festive Colors Without Being Too Matchy
One of the easiest ways to coordinate outfits for Christmas family photos is to choose a color palette rather than matching everyone's clothing. For this session, the Peterson family incorporated deep reds, emerald green, soft cream, and warm neutrals.
Mom's gorgeous green skirt added a little movement and elegance, while the girls' outfits brought the perfect balance of festive patterns and cozy textures. Dad's burgundy shirt tied everything together without making the outfits feel overly coordinated.
The result was a holiday-inspired look that felt festive enough for Christmas cards but timeless enough to display in their home all year long.
A Little Golden-Hour Christmas Magic
One of my favorite things about outdoor family photography is the freedom to let kids be kids. There's no need to stand perfectly still or smile at the camera for every photograph.
For this session, we embraced the beautiful golden light, let the girls run and play, and captured plenty of those sweet, unscripted moments that make family photographs so meaningful.
From the girls running together to the entire family laughing and playing, these are the kinds of images I love most. They're beautiful, of course, but more importantly, they feel like the family I'm photographing.
Christmas Family Photos You'll Love Beyond the Holidays
While holiday family photos are perfect for Christmas cards and gifts, I always encourage families to think beyond the season when planning their outfits and locations.
Choosing rich seasonal colors, natural textures, and a beautiful outdoor setting creates photographs that feel festive without being limited to December.
Whether you're planning Christmas family photos, updating your family portraits, or simply documenting another year together, the most important thing is creating images that feel authentic to your family.
As a Charlotte family photographer, I photograph families throughout Charlotte, Gastonia, Lake Norman, and the surrounding areas, creating natural, timeless portraits that celebrate every season of life.
Ready to plan your own family session? I'd love to help you create photographs you'll treasure long after the holidays have passed.
